Their story — in their own words

Hi, my name is Nyki.

I’m 24 years old. I’m a nurse. I’ve spent my career caring for others, holding hands during hard diagnoses, comforting families, and advocating for my patients.

I never imagined I would become the patient.

In 2024, I was diagnosed with an aggressive form of colon cancer. Since then, I’ve undergone major abdominal surgery, including an ileostomy to preserve my intestines, and I am currently receiving chemotherapy.

As a nurse, I know what these words mean. I understand the scans. I understand the labs. I understand the statistics. But nothing prepares you for hearing them about yourself.

I am a full time mom to my 3 year old son, Jamari. He doesn’t understand cancer. He just knows Mommy gets tired. He knows Mommy has a bag on her stomach now. He knows Mommy goes to the hospital a lot.

Chemo has made it impossible for me to work right now due to cancer pains. The same hands that once cared for others are now too weak some days to care for myself. Losing my ability to work has been one of the hardest parts of this journey. I have always been independent. I have always provided.

Now I’m learning how to receive.

This fundraiser will help with medical expenses not covered by insurance, transportation to treatments, basic living expenses while I’m unable to work, childcare support on treatment days, and everyday stability so I can focus on healing.

Cancer is heavy. Being a young mom with cancer is heavier.

But I am fighting. I am showing up. I am believing that God still has a purpose for me beyond this diagnosis.

If you feel led to donate, share, or pray, I am deeply grateful. Every act of kindness helps me keep going not just for me, but for my son.

Thank you for standing with the nurse who is now learning what it means to be cared for.

With love, Nyki
