Nicolas is 2 years old — his liver cancer has spread to his lungs

Nicolas Trujillo is two years old. He should be filling a house with noise right now — running from room to room, dropping toys, refusing to nap. Instead he is recovering from cancer surgery, and his family is staring at bills they have no way of paying.

Nicolas was diagnosed with cancer of the liver. Then came the sentence no parent survives hearing calmly: it has spread to his lungs. Two organs. One two-year-old body. A fight most adults would not be able to carry.

On the 7th of August he went into surgery. His parents handed their baby to strangers in scrubs and waited in a corridor with nothing to hold on to but each other. He came through it. He is still here. He is still fighting.

But surviving surgery is not the end of this — it is the beginning of the expensive part. Scans to see whether the lungs are responding. Follow-up appointments. Medication. Specialist visits. Each one arrives with a price attached, and each one is not optional if Nicolas is going to live.

His family is already struggling to pay for all of his medical bills. They are not asking for comfort or convenience. They are asking for the difference between treatment that continues and treatment that stops because an invoice went unpaid.

This is Nicolas: the son of my mother's best friend, a little boy I have watched grow, now with an IV line taped to an arm too small for it. He does not understand what cancer is. He understands that it hurts, and that his mum is there.
